Short-Term Counselling in London and Online Across the UK

Short-term therapy works well when something specific comes up. You might be struggling with a difficult decision, work-related burnout, or a recent break-up or loss. You’d like to think clearly about the issue, with someone alongside you, but without unpicking your whole life.

Short-term counselling is a focused piece of work with an agreed end point. Together, we name the issue you want to address, we stay with it, and we work towards changes you can put into practice straight away.

I offer short-term counselling in person in central London and online via Zoom to clients anywhere in the UK. I typically suggest between six and twelve sessions, or an academic term. You are free to specifiy a number of sessions in advance if that suits you better.

What is short-term counselling?

Short-term counselling is a focused piece of work with an agreed end point. We name the issue you want to address, we stay with it, and we work towards changes you can put into practice straight away.

It usually runs for between six and twelve sessions. We can also agree a set number in advance if that suits you better. Either way, you know from the start roughly how long this will take and what we are working towards.

What happens during a session

We start by getting clear on what you want from the work. That might be managing stress, easing a difficult relationship, finding your footing after a bereavement, or making a decision you have been putting off.

From there, each session is shaped around you. In practice that usually means:

  • space to speak openly about what is going on, without judgement
  • questions and observations from me that help you see the situation differently
  • practical strategies and coping tools you can use between sessions
  • a check on how those changes are landing in daily life

My style is warm and direct. I will listen properly, and I will also say what I notice. Sessions last 50 minutes and are held at the same day and time each week, though with a little notice we can move them.

Online sessions follow exactly the same structure, so nothing is lost if you choose to work by Zoom.

What short-term counselling can help with

Clients come to me for support with:

  • anxiety and stress
  • low mood, and mild to moderate depression
  • relationship difficulties, including communication, breakups and family conflict
  • work pressures such as burnout, conflict or a change of role
  • confidence and self-esteem
  • bereavement and major life change
  • important decisions you feel stuck on

Many people find that a short piece of work is enough to get a new perspective and move forward with more ease.

The approaches I work with

I trained as an integrative counsellor, which means I draw on more than one therapeutic approach rather than applying a single method to everyone. In short-term work I draw most on:

  • solution-focused work, which keeps our attention on where you want to get to and the steps that take you there
  • person-centred work, which trusts that you know yourself best and gives you room to think out loud
  • practical tools for managing anxiety, stress and low mood between sessions

The blend is tailored to you and what you bring to the therapy. We can talk it through at the start, and adjust as the work unfolds.

When longer term work is the better fit

Short-term counselling is not right for everything. If you are struggling with Complex Trauma; the emotional weight of a chronic illness; or a pattern that has run through your life for years, a longer piece of work will serve you better.

Working with me in London or anywhere in the UK

In person sessions are held in central London, near Westminster Bridge Road, SE1, with further rooms at Clapham Junction and Surbiton. Online sessions by Zoom are available UK wide.

For London-based clients, one of my locations is usually within reach of the office or the commute home. If travelling adds pressure to an already full week, online sessions keep the work going without the journey.

Arrange a free consultation

If you would like to talk it over first, I offer a free 10 minute telephone consultation with no obligation. This is to see if we are a good fit for working together.
